Mythical Creature

Mythical Creature project I picked a dragon

Step 1
Using newspaper and tape build the base shape for the head and the neck of the dragon

Step 2
Paper maché the crap out of it with alternating layers of craft paper and tissue paper 6-8 layers of craft paper is best

Step 3
Cut open the head to form the lower jaw and the upper jaw and head

Step 4
Using plaster strengthen the head piece and add or fix detail on the head. Making sure to plaster the inside of the head too. Plaster the Neck as well

Step 5
Using air-dry clay make the teeth of the dragon with pairs of various sizes and a wire down the middle. let dry

Step 6
Roll a large snake out of air dry clay place around the inside the head where you want the gumline of the mouth, securing it in place with a piece of plaster.

Step 7
While clay is still wet, stick in the teeth with the pairs split on either side of the head.

Step 8
With small strips of plaster wrap around each tooth to secure it and give the gums more detail. Let dry

***Note: Next I would have painted the teeth and the inside of the mouth.

Step 9
Using  two paper cups cut off the bottom and curl into cone shape. and tape together. bend and curve cone to make it look like is is a horn

Step 10
using plaster build up the ridges of the horns

Step 11
Using lots of hot glue, glue the back of the dragons head together connecting the upper and the lower jaw in an open mouth position.

Step 12
Use plaster to smooth out the back of the head and mouth,

Step 13
cut hole in top of neck piece and on the bottom of the head to create the troat and attach the two

Note: Due to how heavy the head is with the plaster and teeth I used a hard card tube as reinforcement.

Step 14
Hot glue and plaster into place.

Step 15
Make the tongue by making a wire frame, then wrap in newspaper and tape.

Step 16
cover and shape further with plaster

Step 17
Paint it with gesso

Step 18
paint it red with acrylic paint and rubber latex Note: I did not attach the tongue untill way later to make painting the mouth easier

Step 19
Attach the Horns in place with hot glue and plaster

Step 19
Use plasticine to create more detail like brow ridges and nostrils and other feature

Note: remember that when sculpting with plasticine one must use snakes and balls

Step 20
Use a styrofoam ball cut in half to make the eyeball. And use plasticine to fit it in and make the eye socket around it.

Step 21
Once happy with the features paper mache over the plasticine to make it hard

Step 22
Let dry and tell a joke
what did sushi A say to sushi B?... WASABI

Step 23
Gesso the whole dragon

Step 24
Paint the inside of mouth red and black with acrylic paint

Step 25
I put a silver and gray base coat all over the dragon minus the interior of mouth, teeth, and horns

Step 26
Build up layers pof colour on the dragon skin, as well as on the teeth
use acrylic gel around the base of the teeth to make it look like saliva.

Step 27
paint the horns rub on a coat of gold paint
Step 28
Using a jigsaw cut the base  of the neck at an angle to make it come off the mount at the angle you want
Note: do not throw away pieces cut off

Step 29
Find a piece of would and use band saw to cut it so it will fit in the base of the neck and act as a support when mounting the dragon

Step 30
Find piece of plywood that fits head of dragon

Step 31
Using a washer and a screw, screw the base of the neck from the side into the support block.

Step 32
From behind the plywood screw the base thru to the base support block

Step 33
Wallpaper the plywood

Step 34
Hot glue the extra pieces of plaster from trimming the neck to the plywood to make it look like the dragon in breaking through a wall, and the it is the broken plaster.

Step 35
Lining up the pattern of the wall paper wallpaper the back of the plaster.

Step 36 FEV everything. (except the teeth and the horns) drip in on the backing to create break down

Step 37
Use acrylic varnish with high gloss all over the dragon only leaving his horns this time.
